Sewage sludge is the semi-solid by-product of wastewater treatment. The sludge is still considered to be a hazardous waste (containing pathogenic organisms, toxic materials, heavy metals), which requires further disposal. Sewage sludge disposal costs may reach 50% of the total wastewater treatment cost at organic waste disposal plants.
